Before reading

Let’s start our sequence by reading the very first paragraph.

Section 1

Georges Milton and Lennie Small, two itinerant farm workers, are on their way to work on a ranch in California. They stop for the night by a pool near the river. They talk about their life together and their dream for the future.

Section 2

George and Lennie arrive at the ranch. They are met by Candy, an old swamper who shows them the bunk-house. The boss interviews them. They meet Curley (the boss’ son), who takes a dislike for Lennie. Curley’s wife comes by the door and talks to them. Before dinner, the workmen returned from the fields. George and Lennie meet Slim and Carlson, who say the old swamper’s dog shoot be shot down.

Section 3

George and Lennie spend the evening with the men on the ranch. Lennie plays with his pup in the barn while George talks with Slim in the bunk-house. Carlson takes Candy’s old dog out and shoots him. Candy overhears George and Lennie talking about their plans for a farm of their own, and wants to join them. Later, Slim returns to the bunk-house with Curley ; Curley picks up a fight with Lennie who crushes his hand.

Section 4

On Saturday evening most of the men from the ranch go into town. Crooks is in his room in the barn when Lennie and then Candy come in and talk to him. Curley’s wife wants to join them, but when she asks about Curley’s hand the men tell her to go away.
